Tennessee   Coming To Nashville?

So you're coming to Nashville?  Where should you stay?  Where can you hear live music?  Where can you perform you own original material on a songwriter's night?  What sites should you see?  Or are you planning on moving here?  Hopefully the information on this page will help you.

Where To Stay - Basically you have your choice of being close to music row or not.   There's not necessarily an advantage being close to the row, unless you don't have a car to get around.  Fortunately, all parts of Nashville are easily accessible via the highway system and you can usually get anywhere in about 20 minutes even if you're not near music row.

Where To Hear or Play Music - Here's a partial list of the many places to both hear original music as well as perform your own.  Be sure to take in at least one or two writer's nights and listen to hit songwriters perform their hits as only they can.  If you're interested in testing the waters, check out one of the many open mic nights and try out your own original material.

Who To See - If you're trying to break into the business, it's generally a good idea to try to make some appointments before you arrive.  Publishers, A&R people, producers and even you're songwriting friends who live here can be extremely booked up depending on the time of year.  Always try to plan a lunch or a meeting at least 2-3 weeks before coming to town.   If you already have contacts in the industry, you'll want to strengthen them by trying to meet with those people.  If not, your first stops should be at either one of the songwriting organizations (NSAI, SGA or TSAI) or one of the performing rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI or SESAC).  They can help guide you in the right direction and help plug you in to the music industry.

What Sites To See - Got some extra time while you're in town?  Nashville is abound with historic as well as other interesting sites.   Take a trip to a museum or one of the many historic mansions. Take a riverboat cruise or take on the night life of Second Avenue.  Maybe you can try to learn to two-step at the Wildhorse Saloon.   Here's a quick list of some "must sees."  Whatever you do, be sure to see the Opryland Hotel.
