 Songwriting Organizations
Here's a list of the major songwriting
organizations. Songwriting organizations can be a great source of songwriting
education and musical camaraderie. Some songwriting organizations are international
with local songwriting chapters in your area. Other songwriting organizations
are locally based. Typical services of such songwriter organizations may include
song critiques, songwriting seminars, newsletters about songwriting, access to books about
songwriting and general music business information.
ASCAP - American Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers. A performing rights songwriting organization that collects songwriting
performance royalties (i.e. when your song gets played). Provides some services for
the education of songwriters and can often be a welcome door in getting heard in the music
industry. Also, has a searchable database for all ASCAP performed songs. Has
offices in major cities for songwriters.
BMI - Broadcast Music Inc. Similar to ASCAP, a
performing rights songwriting organization that collects songwriting performance
royalties. Provides some services for the education of songwriters and also has a
searchable database for all BMI performed songs.. Has offices in major cities for
songwriters.
Christian
Songwriter's Group - An on-line organization of Christian Songwriters.
Free e-mail list and web site which features weekly songwriter chats, a
cyber "coffee house", songwriting resources and much more.
Just Plain Folks - An on-line organization of
Songwriters, Recording Artists, Music Publishers, Record Labels, Performing Arts
Societies, Educational Institutions, Recording Studios and Engineers, Producers, Legal
Professionals, Publicists and Journalists, Publications, Music Manufacturers and Retailers
and about every other type of member of the Music Industry.
NAS - National Academy of Songwriters. Focuses
on songwriting education. Also lobbies and keeps songwriters abreast of legislation
that might affect songwriting royalties. Has a great songwriting newsletter chock full of
songwriter interviews and tips on the craft of songwriting.
NSAI - Nashville Songwriter's Association
International. Focuses on songwriting education. Also lobbies and keeps
songwriters abreast of legislation that might affect songwriter royalties. Has over
90 local songwriting chapters.
SESAC - Similar to ASCAP and BMI, SESAC is a performing
rights songwriting organization that collects songwriting performance royalties.
Provides some services for songwriting education. Also has a database for all SESAC
performed songs. Has offices in major cities for songwriters.
SGA - Songwriters Guild of America. Focuses
on songwriting education. Also lobbies and keeps songwriters abreast of legislation
that might affect songwriting royalties. Has offices in major cities for
songwriters.
