Songwriter's Nights

wpeE.jpg (1509 bytes)Want to test your original songs out on an audience?  Want to listen to some hit songwriters play?  Nashville has plenty of clubs and cafes where you can perform or just listen.   Listed below are some of Nashville's most popular and famous songwriter venues.

Songwriter's Nights (3276 bytes) The Bluebird Cafe - 4104 Hillsboro Rd.  Phone: 615-383-1461. The Bluebird Cafe has gained a reputation worldwide for presenting the best original country and acoustic music seven nights a week. Performers generally do not play "cover" songs and are accompanied by just one guitar or piano.  Any night of the week, you can hear songwriters performing original material.  Typically there is an "early" show (6:30-8:30pm) with no cover charge and a late show (9:30pm-whenever it ends) with a cover charge anywhere from $7 up.  Both of these shows usually feature "in-the-rounds" with 4 songwriters sitting in a circle playing their original material (which are often hit songs).  This is the place to go to learn from the best songwriters in town.  Be warned -- the motto of the Bluebird is "shhh" -- no talking is allowed during the shows.  Also all shows are non-smoking.

Note: if you do plan on seeing a show - call early in the week to make reservations since most shows (especially the late ones) sell out quickly.

Playing the Bluebird.  Most nights of the week are reserved for established performers and songwriters, except for Sunday and Monday.

Sunday writers nights are by audition only. They hold live auditions every 4 or 5 months. Call for the next date. If you live more than 100 miles from Nashville you must send a tape (guitar/vocal or piano vocal) with 3 songs instead.

Every Monday night from 6:00 - 9:00 is open mic night. Plan on being there at 5:30 (when the doors open) for sign up. Names will be drawn at random, 24 per night, and those selected will be given a chance to perform 2 original songs. They require that you bring live accompaniment, and they do not provide a keyboard or a guitar.

Boardwalk Cafe (1407 bytes)  The Boardwalk Cafe - 4114 Nolensville Road.  Phone: 615-832-5104.
An excellent place to build up your performing chops with songwriter's nights on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7pm.  Call for more information.

Songwriter's Nights (1645 bytes) The Broken Spoke - (in the Ramada Inn) 1412 Brick Church Pike.
                 Phone: 615-226-3230

The Broken Spoke Songwriters Cafe features songwriters night Sunday through Thursday and is getting increasingly known for both its good sound and good food. It's a great place to hear both new talent as well as hit songwriters.  Debi Champion hosts on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights; Rick Tiger  on Tuesdays, Lee Rascone on Fridays and Saturdays, and my friend Dale Burie on Sunday nights.

Playing The Broken Spoke - If you are a songwriter and would like to play their writer's night, call for more information.

Douglas Corner (1755 bytes) Douglas Corner Cafe -- 2106-A 8th Ave. S. Phone: 615-298-1688. Douglas Corner Cafe is another extrememly popular songwriters' hangout. The club is a little more rustic than the Bluebird Cafe and can be a bit smokier but draws in Nashville's top songwriters as well as up and coming songwriters.    Usually there is both an early show (no cover charge) and a late show (cover charge).  Unlike the Bluebird, reservations are not needed, but get there early if you're going to see a top show.
